Biosphere Technology Towards a Better World

Biosphere technology is the area of applying ecological concepts to improve human systems, such as building environments and the design of sustainable settlements.

Modern technology has outgrown its usefulness. We are on our way towards destroying the only planet we have for this civilization, while also ruining the living conditions for many people around the world with pollution, poverty, and war. The idea of Biospheres could be a possible solution since they aim at integrating communities into their environment in order to obtain self-sufficiency while creating an abundance within their system.

A biosphere is a self-contained life-supporting unit that can theoretically exist on any celestial body able to bear gravitation pressures similar to Earth’s sea-level atmospheric pressure (1 bar). Biospheres differ from greenhouses because they would be designed to create and maintain an Earth-like environment.

Biosphere 2 (Earth) is an experiment in the science of planetary engineering, dedicated to the proposition that human beings can help restore and improve the global environment through thoughtful attention to systems that sustain life on this planet. By studying what was created within Biosphere 2, we could learn how humans must alter their behavior if they are to succeed at creating a more healthy biosphere.

There are three main objectives behind biospheres: (1) to provide a human-supporting array of ecologies that can be operated automatically; (2) to develop the science and technology for building closed ecological systems; and (3) to use these concepts as an educational tool to help solve problems on Earth.

The design of Biosphere 2 was based on a new kind of space mission, so it had to support humans indefinitely without outside supplies or assistance. This required complete recycling of air, water, food, wastes, and energy within the system while being able to maintain a relatively steady-state – one where oxygen levels didn’t fluctuate more than 10 percent, carbon dioxide less than 25 percent. addition, natural bio-systems are dynamic and often unstable, which makes them difficult to control.

The term “biosphere” was coined by geologist Eduard Suess in 1875 and introduced into English by British scientist John Tyndall in 1883. From Greek bios (life) and sphaira (sphere). The biosphere is the global sum of all ecosystems. In biology, an ecosystem is a natural unit consisting of all plants, animals and micro-organisms in an area functioning together with all of the non-living physical factors of the environment, such as sunlight, soil nutrients, water and air. A subset of the biosphere is a cell or group of cells from a multicellular organism that is for study. This miniature realm is usually called a tissue. A single cell is an entire organism in miniature, complete with internal structure and metabolism; for this reason it can be studied more easily than the whole organism.

The main purpose of these large closed systems is to create colonies that could exist on celestial bodies such as Mars while using their natural resources efficiently and sustainably – meaning, making the best use of them while affecting the least damage possible. These habitats would also need to regulate themselves and be self-sufficient in terms of food, water, and power (energy). They will mimic or imitate processes found in nature which make them self-regulating systems by means of automatic control mechanisms. Biospheres are designed from studying how Earth is naturally regulated suggesting that creating a sustainable terrestrial biosphere on another planet is achievable.

In theory, even if a society’s technological capacity is highly limited or lost, as long as the fabric of life remains functional – as it does on Earth – then humanity will always have a chance to rebuild. In other words, understanding how our biosphere works have the potential to bring humankind into equilibrium with its environment and create a balance between us and nature by manipulating our surroundings just like nature does. It doesn’t mean that we need to re-create every single process that exists in nature; instead, it means that we can use them as blueprints for creating artificial ones that work similarly.

The enclosed living structure is located near Tucson, Arizona; it has two “lungs” that let fresh air into each area for ventilation purposes.

Two additional closed ecological systems were built: The Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF), which collected data about space exposure for almost six years, and Biosphere JR which was the first full-scale biosphere constructed to be inhabited by humans.
